How to Maintain Your Wellness Routine While Traveling

When you go on a vacation, you probably expect restorative relaxation and physical and mental rejuvenation. However, with the stresses and interrupted schedules, sometimes travel can feel anything but relaxing. 

Keep your body feeling its best by continuing to prioritize your wellness routine, even in the rigors of traveling. Here’s how.

 

#1: Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is often the first thing we let slip when we travel. It’s easy to want to spend as much time as possible enjoying your vacation and thinking you’ll sleep when you get back home. In reality, sleeping is the key to staying healthy while traveling! Sleeping impacts the rest of your health: your mental state and your immune system, just to name a few. 

While you don’t want to sleep your vacation away, you can do a couple of things to  ensure you’re getting enough sleep: 

  • Take advantage of travel time: Sleep during plane rides or road trips, if possible
  • Stick to a consistent morning and bedtime routine to help signal your body when it’s time to rest
  • Diffuse calming essential oils to help relax your body for a more restful sleep

#2: Stay Hydrated

Keeping your body moving and your heart pumping is a great way to keep your body performing well, even if it’s not your regular health routine. If you’re looking for a more structured workout, try to stay in a hotel with a gym for an early morning workout.

However, a more convenient way may be to plan physical activities into your travel, such as hiking, biking, or walking tours in the mountains or a city, or swimming or surfing if at the beach.

#5: Eat Local and Unprocessed

Speaking of eating, your meals can also be a source of good nutrition while still being a unique traveling experience. Finding local farmer's markets for locally grown produce is a great way to experience the local culture while eating the healthiest foods available.

Many health-conscious travelers also opt for a hotel or Airbnb with a kitchen so that they can cook their food to their own preferences. However, if that’s not possible for you or you’re looking for something more convenient, try finding a local farm-to-table restaurant or a place where organic ingredients are used in the food.

 

#6. Practice Mindfulness

Traveling can be stressful. Try to incorporate mindfulness and focused relaxation into your day. This could be a guided meditation before bed, followed by a gentle massage to release muscle tension. You could also diffuse your favorite essential and natural oils as you stretch or practice restorative yoga.
